Sankardev and Vaishnava Trail
The Neo-Vaishnavite movement of Assam is one-of-a-kind and worth exploring! Unlike in rest of India, the Vaishnava movement propounded by Assamese Saint Sankardev in the 15-16th centuries was not purely religious in nature; it was an all-encompassing campaign to help strengthen the roots of Assamese literature, music, dance, art and above all, usher in a feeling of unity within a multiplicity of people, eventually aiding in the formation of what is called Assamese Jati or community. The vestiges of Sankardev’s Nama Dharma thrives till day in the community’s common prayer halls, in the monasteries, in devotional music and an array of monastic dances including a mask dance. In fact, an entire island, Majuli, termed Asia’s largest riverine island, is dedicated to Vaishnava monasteries that are hundreds of years old and yet thriving institutions.
Come, visit Assam, to take a peek at these monasteries, their monks, their daily life, the holy music, the dances, the sacred art and weaves.
